Roman Szumski is a Canadian pathologist and public servant based in Toronto, Ontario. He currently serves as special advisor to the Vice President of Research and Innovation at McGill University.[1] He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.[2]
History
Szumski attended McGill University from 1977-1980, graduating with honours with his Bachelor of Science in immunology. He then studied at Queen's University from 1981-1984 for his Doctor of Medicine before completing medical internships and training from 1984-1989.[3]
Career
Szumski was founding CEO of Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS), which "brought together public and private laboratory services in the Calgary Regional Health Authority into a novel PPP public-private partnership." He worked there from 1996-1999.[1:1]
From 1999-2003, Szumski worked as Vice President of Science & Technology at MDS.[1:2] While at MDS, he "led the development of new business initiatives in cancer therapeutics and personalized medicine."[2:1]
He joined National Research Council Canada (NRC) in 2005 as Vice-President of Life Sciences.[2:2]
COVID-19
From June 2020 to May 2021, Szumski served as Senior Vice President of COVID-19 Vaccine Acquisition at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), working closely with Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) to "select and acquire COVID-19 vaccines for the Canadian population."[1:3]
