Deshayne Fell

Deshayne Fell is a Canadian perinatal epidemiologist based in Ottawa, Ontario. She is an associate professor in the University of Ottawa School of Epidemiology and Public Health, a scientist at the CHEO Research Institute, an adjunct scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES),[1] and a researcher for BORN Ontario.[2]
Fell is a liaison representative for the Canadian Association for Immunization Research, Evaluation and Education (CAIRE) on the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), responsible for developing recommendations for use of COVID-19 vaccines in Canada.[3] Meanwhile, she also served on the Vaccine Safety Working Group of the Vaccine Surveillance Reference Group (VSRG).[4]
She has been a member of two World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Advisory Groups related to maternal immunization.[5] She is a faculty member of the Society for Epidemic Research (SER).[6]
History
Fell presented at the World Vaccine Congress Washington 2022 on the subject of maternal immunity and vaccines.[7]
Activities
Fell's research uses large, linked population databases and registries to improve our understanding of factors affecting maternal and infant population health. Her specific focus includes infection and immunization during pregnancy and their relationship with birth outcomes and longer-term pediatric health outcomes, including safety and effectiveness of maternal immunization.
She has conducted research with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, including as a Principal Investigator.[8][9] At least one of these studies was also funded and/or coordinated by the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) and the Initiative for Vaccine Research (IVR), funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).[10]
