The Alberta Ministry of Health, also known as Alberta Health, was a ministry of the Government of Alberta responsible for administering provincial health policies. In May 2025, the ministry was split into the Alberta Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services, Alberta Ministry of Hospital and Surgical Health Services, Alberta Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction and Alberta Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services.[1]
History
Alberta Health received a $320,055 grant from the Public Health Agency of Canada's Immunization Partnership Fund for a pilot project using text messages to promote vaccination of infants.[2]
COVID-19
On May 11, 2021, Alberta Health announced it would stop offering "first doses" of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine due to supply issues.[3]
In 2021, Alberta Health introduced the AB Covid Records Verifier application to administer the province's vaccine passport system. On November 15, 2021, the Alberta COVID Records system utilizing a QR code became "the only option for providing proof of vaccination."[4]
Dr. Mark Joffe was appointed as Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health on November 14, 2022.[5]

As of May 16, 2025, the Ministry of Health was split into several smaller agencies: the Alberta Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services, Alberta Ministry of Hospital and Surgical Health Services, Alberta Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction and Alberta Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services.[1:1]
