# Wikimedia Endowment

The **Wikimedia Endowment** is an American nonprofit charitable organization based in San Francisco, California. It provides financial support for numerous projects in the Wikimedia network, including MediaWiki, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia and Wiktionary.[\[1\]](#fn1)

## History

In January 2016, the [Wikimedia Foundation](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Wikimedia-Foundation) announced the creation of the Wikimedia Endowment, a $100 million fund managed by the Tides Foundation.[\[2\]](#fn2)
