# Tether

**Tether**, previously known as **Realcoin**, is a cryptocurrency company based in Hong Kong and Isle of Man.[\[1\]](#fn1) It is a subsidiary of iFinex.[\[2\]](#fn2)

## History

The company was launched as Realcoin in July 2014 by Brock Pierce, Craig Sellars and Reeve Collins using the Mastercoin protocol.[\[3\]](#fn3) In November 2014, it was rebranded to Tether, and announced partnerships with Bitfinex, Expresscoin, GoCoin and ZenBox.[\[1:1\]](#fn1)
