# Roman Szumski

**Roman Szumski** is a Canadian pathologist and public servant based in Toronto, Ontario. He currently serves as special advisor to the Vice President of Research and Innovation at McGill University.[\[1\]](#fn1) He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.[\[2\]](#fn2)

## History

Szumski attended McGill University from 1977-1980, graduating with honours with his Bachelor of Science in immunology. He then studied at Queen's University from 1981-1984 for his Doctor of Medicine before completing medical internships and training from 1984-1989.[\[3\]](#fn3)

### Career

Szumski was founding CEO of Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS), which "brought together public and private laboratory services in the Calgary Regional Health Authority into a novel PPP public-private partnership." He worked there from 1996-1999.[\[1:1\]](#fn1)

From 1999-2003, Szumski worked as Vice President of Science & Technology at MDS.[\[1:2\]](#fn1) While at MDS, he "led the development of new business initiatives in cancer therapeutics and personalized medicine."[\[2:1\]](#fn2)

He joined [National Research Council Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/National-Research-Council-Canada) (NRC) in 2005 as Vice-President of Life Sciences.[\[2:2\]](#fn2)

### COVID-19

From June 2020 to May 2021, Szumski served as Senior Vice President of COVID-19 Vaccine Acquisition at the [Public Health Agency of Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Public-Health-Agency-of-Canada) (PHAC), working closely with [Public Services and Procurement Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Public-Services-and-Procurement-Canada) (PSPC) to "select and acquire [COVID-19 vaccines](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/COVID-19-vaccine) for the Canadian population."[\[1:3\]](#fn1)
