# Peter Schwartz

**Peter Schwartz** is an American futurist and business executive. He is a co-founder of the [Global Business Network](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Global-Business-Network) (GBN), a member of the [Council on Foreign Relations](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Council-on-Foreign-Relations), The Edge,[\[1\]](#fn1) and Singapore's Research, Innovation and Enterprise Council,[\[2\]](#fn2) an agenda contributor for the [World Economic Forum](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/World-Economic-Forum),[\[3\]](#fn3) and a member of the WEF's Network of Global Agenda Councils.[\[2:1\]](#fn2) He serves on the boards of the Long Now Foundation, the Center for a New American Security, the World Affairs Council, and the [Santa Fe Institute](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Santa-Fe-Institute),[\[1:1\]](#fn1) and is a distinguished fellow at the Center for Strategic Futures.[\[2:2\]](#fn2)[\[4\]](#fn4) He currently serves as senior vice president of strategic planning for Salesforce[\[3:1\]](#fn3) and a venture partner at [Alta Partners](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Alta-Partners).[\[1:2\]](#fn1)

He was a partner of the Monitor Group, which became Monitor Deloitte following its purchase by [Deloitte](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Deloitte).[\[2:3\]](#fn2) He was also previously a member of the 21st Century Council, the Council for the Future of Europe, and the *WorldPost* at the Berggruen Institute.[\[5\]](#fn5)[\[2:4\]](#fn2) He also served as a special advisor for the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI),[\[6\]](#fn6) and was on the board of advisors for the Foresight Institute.[\[7\]](#fn7) He is represented by Stern Strategy Group for public speaking opportunities and advisory services.[\[8\]](#fn8)

## History

Schwartz joined the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in 1972, rising to become director of SRI's Strategic Environment Center.[\[9\]](#fn9)

In 1982, Schwartz took over from Pierre Wack as head of the scenario planning practice at Shell.[\[10\]](#fn10) He left Shell in 1986.[\[3:2\]](#fn3)

In 1987, Schwartz co-founded the Global Business Network (GBN) alongside Napier Collyns, Jay Ogilvy, Lawrence Wilkinson, and Stewart Brand.[\[11\]](#fn11)

Schwartz provided a testimonial printed in John Petersen's 1997 book, *Out of the Blue: Wild Cards and Other Big Future Surprises.*[\[12\]](#fn12)

Schwartz served as a member of the 21st Century Council at the Berggruen Institute, which ran from 2011 to 2017.[\[5:1\]](#fn5)[\[13\]](#fn13)
