# Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada

The **Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs Canada (CFJA)** is a Canadian federal government agency within the [Department of Justice Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Department-of-Justice-Canada).

## History

CFJA was created in 1978 "to safeguard the independence of the judiciary and put federally appointed judges at arm’s length from the Department of Justice."[\[1\]](#fn1)

Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould appointed Marc A. Giroux as Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs on June 21, 2017.[\[1:1\]](#fn1)[\[2\]](#fn2) Giroux was re-appointed on June 21, 2022.[\[2:1\]](#fn2)

## Organization

CJFA is listed as being part of the [Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Canadian-Superior-Courts-Judges-Association)'s network.[\[3\]](#fn3) It is also a member organization of the [International Organization for Judicial Training](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/International-Organization-for-Judicial-Training) (IOJT)[\[4\]](#fn4) and a partner of the [National Judicial Institute](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/National-Judicial-Institute) (NJI).[\[5\]](#fn5)

CFJA provides administrative support to the [Canadian Judicial Council](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Canadian-Judicial-Council) (CJC),[\[6\]](#fn6) and hosts the Action Committee on Modernizing Court Operations (formerly known as the [Action Committee on Court Operations in Response to COVID-19](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Action-Committee-on-Court-Operations-in-Response-to-COVID-19)).[\[7\]](#fn7)
