# Office for Life Sciences

The **Office for Life Sciences (OLS)** is a unit of the Government of the United Kingdom.

## History

The OLS was created in January 2009 by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.[\[1\]](#fn1)

The first policy paper published by the OLS was titled "[UK Life Sciences Strategy](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment%5Fdata/file/32457/11-1429-strategy-for-uk-life-sciences.pdf)," and was made available online December 5, 2011.[\[2\]](#fn2) One of the described plans from the paper was to "make the UK the ‘go-to’ place for experimental medicine."[\[3\]](#fn3)

An [update](https://web.archive.org/web/20230410033314/https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment%5Fdata/file/34596/12-1123-life-sciences-strategy-update-august-2012.pdf) was published on August 20, 2012, focusing on a shift in investment and overall priority to cell and gene therapies, regulatory ‘flexibility,’ and advances in genetics.[\[4\]](#fn4)

On December 10, 2012, another update was published titled "[Strategy for UK life sciences: one year on](https://web.archive.org/web/20230301171014/https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment%5Fdata/file/36684/12-1346-strategy-for-uk-life-sciences-one-year-on.pdf)."[\[5\]](#fn5)
