It is part of the [Government of Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Government-of-Canada)'s Science Portfolio overseen by [Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Innovation-Science-and-Economic-Development-Canada) (ISED). NSERC was among the primary agencies responsible for Canada's response to the declared COVID-19 pandemic.[\[1\]](#fn1) ## History On May 15, 2020, the Government of Canada announced the [Canada Research Continuity Emergency Fund](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Canada-Research-Continuity-Emergency-Fund) (CRCEF), "a temporary program" which was "established to help sustain the research enterprise at Canadian universities and affiliated health research institutions affected by the COVID-19 pandemic." CRCEF was administered by the [Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Social-Sciences-and-Humanities-Research-Council-of-Canada) (SSHRC) on behalf of the [Canadian Institutes of Health Research](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Canadian-Institutes-of-Health-Research) (CIHR), SSHRC and NSERC.[\[2\]](#fn2) In March 2021, CIHR announced a grant funding opportunity called "Encouraging vaccine confidence in Canada" to be co-administered with NSERC and SSHRC.
