# National Institutes of Health

The **National Institutes of Health (NIH)** is an agency of the [United States Federal Government](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/United-States-Federal-Government) responsible for biomedical and public health research. It sits within the [United States Department of Health and Human Services](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/United-States-Department-of-Health-and-Human-Services).

## History

On November 26, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump nominated Jay Bhattacharya to lead the NIH in his second administration.[\[1\]](#fn1) He was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 25, 2025.[\[2\]](#fn2)

There are 27 institutes and centers that currently make up the NIH, one independent agency, and one former center:
