It was founded by Nathan Wolfe, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of [Baktus](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Baktus),[\[1\]](#fn1) and is the for-profit sister company of [Global Viral](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Global-Viral).[\[2\]](#fn2) ## History Metabiota was founded by Nathan Wolfe, who incorporated the company in California on February 1, 2008.[\[2:1\]](#fn2)[\[3\]](#fn3) Metabiota received a $23 million contract with the [United States Department of Defense](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/United-States-Department-of-Defense) for work between February 2014 and November 2016.[\[4\]](#fn4) In April 2014, Hunter Biden helped secure funding for Metabiota and a "science project" collaboration with [Burisma Holdings](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Burisma-Holdings) in Ukraine.[\[5\]](#fn5)[\[6\]](#fn6)[\[7\]](#fn7) On December 3, 2014, Metabiota announced that it had been awarded €80 million through the [European Commission](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/European-Commission)'s Horizon 2020 program to develop a test and treatment against Ebola.[\[8\]](#fn8) In May 2015, Metabiota raised $30 million from a new funding round "in part to expand its client base among insurance companies and governments."[\[2:2\]](#fn2) The round was led by [Rosemont Seneca Technology Partners](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Rosemont-Seneca-Technology-Partners).[\[9\]](#fn9) In September 2015, Google Ventures (GV) invested $1 million in Metabiota, and partnered with the company to offer their clients "forecasting and risk-management tools."[\[10\]](#fn10) In 2017, Metabiota applauded the introduction of “pandemic bond” insurance products by the [World Bank](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/World-Bank).[\[11\]](#fn11) Metabiota, Inc. was registered as an "extraprovincial company" with the [Government of British Columbia](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Government-of-British-Columbia) on August 28, 2017.[\[12\]](#fn12) On August 8, 2018, Metabiota announced it had been awarded a sub-contract from Black & Veatch to support the [Defense Threat Reduction Agency](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Defense-Threat-Reduction-Agency) (DTRA)'s Cooperative Biological Engagement Program (CBEP) in Iraq.[\[13\]](#fn13) ### COVID-19 In 2021, Metabiota was highlighted by the [World Economic Forum](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/World-Economic-Forum) as one of its "Tech Pioneers."[\[14\]](#fn14) On September 30, 2021, Metabiota was merged with Baktus Acquisition Corporation, a subsidiary of its parent company, [Baktus](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Baktus).[\[15\]](#fn15) On March 27, 2022, Maria Zakharova of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation published an alleged timeline of American-Ukrainian bioweapons research which suggested that Metabiota had begun cooperating with [Burisma Holdings](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Burisma-Holdings) on an unnamed "science project in Ukraine" in 2014.[\[6:1\]](#fn6)[\[7:1\]](#fn7) On August 19, 2022, Ginkgo Bioworks announced it would purchase "certain epidemiological data infrastructure assets" from Metabiota and its parent company, Baktus.
