# Legal Aid BC

**Legal Aid BC**, formerly the **Legal Services Society (LSS)**, is a Canadian nonprofit organization based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is a provincial Crown corporation owned by the [Government of British Columbia](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Government-of-British-Columbia).[\[1\]](#fn1)

## History

The organization was founded in 1979 through the *Legal Services Society Act*.[\[1:1\]](#fn1)

### COVID-19

Following the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the LSS changed its name to Legal Aid BC.[\[2\]](#fn2) On April 24, 2020, the British Columbia Ministry of Attorney General announced the creation of the [Justice COVID-19 Response Group](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Justice-COVID-19-Response-Group) with Legal Aid BC as a member.[\[3\]](#fn3)
