**GAVI**, officially **Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance**, is a supranational public-private partnership based in Geneva, Switzerland.

## History

Gavi was founded in 1999 under its original name, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations, subsequently launching in 2000.[\[1\]](#fn1) It was formed as a successor to the Children’s Vaccine Initiative, which was itself founded following the World Summit for Children held in New York in September 1990.[\[2\]](#fn2) United States President Bill Clinton announced a $50 million investment into the Global Fund for Children's Vaccines “to support GAVI's work.” Early board members included Carol Bellamy, then-Executive Director of UNICEF.[\[3\]](#fn3)
