# Emergent BioSolutions

**Emergent BioSolutions**, formerly **BioPort**, is an American biopharmaceutical company based in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

## History

Emergent BioSolutions was founded on September 5, 1998 by Fuad El-Hibri under the name BioPort, for the sole purpose of acquiring the newly-privatized Michigan Biologic Products Institute (MBPI).[\[1\]](#fn1)[\[2\]](#fn2)

In December 2003, the company underwent a corporate restructure and continued operations under the name Emergent BioSolutions beginning in June 2004.[\[3\]](#fn3) Jerome Hauer, former acting assistant secretary of the Office of Public Health Emergency Preparedness at the [United States Department of Health and Human Services](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/United-States-Department-of-Health-and-Human-Services), joined the company's board of directors in May 2004.[\[4\]](#fn4)

On July 14, 2017, Emergent BioSolutions announced it had struck a deal with Sanofi to acquire ACAM2000, the only smallpox vaccine approved by the [Food and Drug Administration](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Food-and-Drug-Administration) (FDA) at the time.[\[5\]](#fn5)

On October 16, 2018, the [Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Coalition-for-Epidemic-Preparedness-Innovations) (CEPI) announced a $36 million grant to Emergent and Profectus BioSciences to develop and manufacture a vaccine against Lassa virus, in collaboration with the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH).[\[6\]](#fn6)[\[7\]](#fn7)

Several representatives from Emergent attended BARDA Industry Day 2018 from October 29-30 in Washington, D.C.[\[8\]](#fn8)

### COVID-19

On April 23, 2020, Emergent BioSolutions announced it had entered a $135 million agreement with [Johnson & Johnson](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Johnson-&-Johnson) to "provide contract development and manufacturing services" for the [Janssen COVID-19 vaccine](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Janssen-COVID-19-vaccine).[\[9\]](#fn9)

In June 2020, [AstraZeneca](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/AstraZeneca) and Emergent partnered to manufacture their COVID-19 vaccine product.[\[10\]](#fn10)[\[11\]](#fn11)

On July 6, 2020, Emergent BioSolutions announced an additional five-year contract with Johnson & Johnson, building on the prior agreement.[\[12\]](#fn12) After the first two years, Emergent would "provide a flexible capacity deployment model to support additional drug substance batches annually."[\[13\]](#fn13)

Some 10-15 million doses of the [AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/AstraZeneca-COVID-19-vaccine) were discarded at Emergent's plant in Baltimore, Maryland due to suspected contamination. This was followed in March 2021 when Emergeent discarded up to 15 million doses of [Janssen](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Janssen) and AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccines after mixing up ingredients between the two. The mistake was attributed to "human error."[\[14\]](#fn14)

In April 2021, the FDA requested that Emergent "suspend manufacture of new drug substance and quarantine existing material manufactured" at the plant.[\[15\]](#fn15)

Emergent sponsored the [World Vaccine Congress Washington 2022](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/World-Vaccine-Congress-Washington-2024) from April 18-21 in Washington, D.C.[\[16\]](#fn16)
