**Eli Lilly & Company**, commonly known as **Eli Lilly** or simply **Lilly**, is an American pharmaceutical company based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

## History

In August 2017, Ophirex announced it had licensed data around sPLA2 inhibitors from Eli Lilly and Shionogi.[\[1\]](#fn1)

Eli Lilly was a sponsor for BioFIT 2017.[\[2\]](#fn2)

On May 28, 2019, Lilly announced an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with Centrexion Therapeutics for CNTX-0290, a novel, small molecule somatostatin receptor type 4 (SSTR4) agonist. At the time of the deal, it was in clinical trials as a potential non-opioid treatment for chronic pain conditions.[\[3\]](#fn3)

Lilly was also developing a product with [BioNTech](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/BioNTech) as of 2019.[\[4\]](#fn4)

### COVID-19

During the declared COVID-19 pandemic, Eli Lilly received Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA) from the [Food and Drug Administration](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Food-and-Drug-Administration) (FDA) for three experimental COVID-19 drugs: Bamlanivimab, Etesevimab and Olumiant (in combination with remdesivir).[\[5\]](#fn5)[\[6\]](#fn6)

In March 2020, Eli Lilly joined the [COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/COVID-19-Therapeutics-Accelerator), funded by the [Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Bill-Melinda-Gates-Foundation), Wellcome Trust, and [Mastercard](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Mastercard), to “accelerate treatments, [vaccines](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/COVID-19-vaccine), and diagnostics.”[\[7\]](#fn7) As part of the accelerator, the company receiving funding from the [Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Strategic Investment Fund](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Bill-Melinda-Gates-Foundation-Strategic-Investment-Fund) (SIF) "to facilitate access to future Lilly therapeutic antibodies under development for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 for low- and middle-income countries."[\[8\]](#fn8)

The company also joined the [Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Accelerating-COVID-19-Therapeutics-Interventions-and-Vaccines) (ACTIV) public-private partnership, launched on April 17, 2020, as an industry leadership organization.[\[9\]](#fn9)

In June 2020, Eli Lilly announced it Shad begun the world's first study of a potential antibody treatment against COVID-19, with a Phase 1 trial of LY-CoV555 (Bamlanivimab), in collaboration with [AbCellera](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/AbCellera).[\[10\]](#fn10)

In September 2020, [Amgen](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Amgen) announced that the company had partnered with Eli Lilly to manufacture COVID-19 antibody therapies.[\[11\]](#fn11)

Bamlanivimab was granted an EUA in November 2020, which was subsequently renewed in February and March 2021.[\[12\]](#fn12)[\[6:1\]](#fn6)

On February 10, 2022, AbCellera announced an agreement between the [United States Federal Government](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/United-States-Federal-Government) and Eli Lilly to purchase "up to 600,000 doses, for at least $720 million," of Bebtelovimab, a monoclonal antibody.[\[13\]](#fn13)

On January 14, 2025, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) announced the launch of the Biotech Ecosystem Venture Fund (BEVF) as a partnership between a16z Bio + Health and Eli Lilly.[\[14\]](#fn14)

On October 7, 2025, Eli Lilly announced its hiring of Peter Marks, former director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), as senior vice president of molecule discovery and to oversee the company's work in infectious diseases.[\[15\]](#fn15)
