# COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator

The **COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator (CTA)** is self-described as “a philanthropic collaboration supporting efforts to research, develop and bring effective treatments against COVID-19 to market quickly and accessibly.”[\[1\]](#fn1)

## Collaborators

CTA is co-funded by the [Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Bill-&-Melinda-Gates-Foundation), Wellcome Trust and [Mastercard](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Mastercard), and was announced on March 10, 2020.[\[2\]](#fn2)[\[3\]](#fn3) The initial funding was $125 million.[\[4\]](#fn4)

By the end of March, a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies announced their participation. Those companies were [BD](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Becton-Dickinson), [Boehringer Ingelheim](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Boehringer-Ingelheim), [bioMérieux](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/bioMerieux), Eisai, [Eli Lilly](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Eli-Lilly), Gilead Sciences, GlaxoSmithKline, [Johnson & Johnson](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Johnson-&-Johnson), [Merck](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Merck), Novartis, [Pfizer](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Pfizer), and Sanofi.[\[5\]](#fn5)

In April 2020, it was announced that the United Kingdom government, the [Chan Zuckerberg Initiative](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Chan-Zuckerberg-Initiative) and Madonna had joined as funders. CZI provided an additional $20 million, with a further $5 million available “based on future needs”. The size of the UK government and Madonna's contributions were not disclosed.[\[4:1\]](#fn4)
