# Chinese Urgent Action Working Group

The **Chinese Urgent Action Working Group (中国维权紧急援助组)**, also known as **China Action**, was a non-governmental organization based in Beijing, China. It now operates as [Safeguard Defenders](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Safeguard-Defenders) based out of Madrid, Spain.

## History

China Action was founded in early 2009 by [Michael Caster](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Michael-Caster) and Peter Dahlin.[\[1\]](#fn1)[\[2\]](#fn2)[\[3\]](#fn3)

In 2016, the Government of China shut down China Action and forced Dahlin to relocate to Madrid.[\[4\]](#fn4)

## Funding

China Action was funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the European Union.[\[5\]](#fn5)
