It is known in various contexts as the **AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine**, **ChAdOx1**, **ChAdOx1-S** or **AZD1222** and by its brand names, **Vaxzevria** or **Covishield**. It is one of numerous experimental [COVID-19 vaccine](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/COVID-19-vaccine) products deployed into the global population beginning in 2020 in response to the declared COVID-19 pandemic. ## History In early June 2020, the [Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Bill-&-Melinda-Gates-Foundation-Strategic-Investment-Fund) contributed $750 million to the development of the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine.[\[1\]](#fn1) AstraZeneca then partnered with [Emergent BioSolutions](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Emergent-BioSolutions) to manufacture their COVID-19 vaccine product.[\[2\]](#fn2)[\[3\]](#fn3) [Health Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Health-Canada) authorized the vaccine under interim order on February 26, 2021.[\[4\]](#fn4) On May 11, 2021, the [Alberta Ministry of Health](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Alberta-Ministry-of-Health) announced it would no longer offer "first doses" of the AstraZeneca product due to supply issues.[\[5\]](#fn5) Some 10-15 million doses were discarded at an Emergent Biosolutions plant in Baltimore, Maryland due to suspected contamination. This was followed in March 2021 by Emergeent discarding up to 15 million doses of the [Janssen](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Janssen-COVID-19-vaccine) and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines after mixing up ingredients between the two.
