# American Association for the Advancement of Science

The **American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)** is an American nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. AAAS is the publisher of the scientific journal *Science*.

## History

Patrick Ball founded the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG) in December 1991, becoming part of AAAS's Science and Human Rights Program in September 2002.[\[1\]](#fn1)[\[2\]](#fn2) On November 3, 2003, HRDAG's staff and projects were transferred to Benetech.[\[2:1\]](#fn2) HRDAG was officially spun out as a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on February 1, 2013.[\[3\]](#fn3)

### COVID-19

*Science*'s reporting on COVID-19 stories is sponsored by the Pulitzer Center and the Heising-Simons Foundation.[\[4\]](#fn4)

AAAS received a $10,000 grant from [Pfizer](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Pfizer) in the first quarter of 2021 for “general operating support.”[\[5\]](#fn5)

## Organization

AAAS is a member of the Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)[\[6\]](#fn6) and the Task Force on American Innovation,[\[7\]](#fn7) and is the organizational co-chair of the Engaging Scientists & Engineers in Policy Coalition (ESEP).[\[8\]](#fn8) AAAS is listed by [ScienceUpFirst](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/ScienceUpFirst) as a collaborator,[\[9\]](#fn9) and a participating organization of the Virtual Biosecurity Center.[\[10\]](#fn10)

AAAS has been a client of Coates & Jarratt.[\[11\]](#fn11)
