It is an initiative led by the [United Nations](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/World-Health-Organization) and supported by organizations around the world, including the [United Nations Foundation](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/United-Nations-Foundation). ## History On October 21, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly published "[Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development](https://web.archive.org/web/20210315191438/https://documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/N15/291/89/PDF/N1529189.pdf?OpenElement)."[\[1\]](#fn1) On June 13, 2019, the United Nations and the [World Economic Forum](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/World-Economic-Forum) (WEF) signed a “Strategic Partnership Framework outlining areas of cooperation to deepen institutional engagement and jointly accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”[\[2\]](#fn2) In April 2021, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged on behalf of the [Government of Canada](https://www.whiteroseintelligence.com/Government-of-Canada) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40-45% below 2005 levels by the year 2030, an acceleration of previously announced goals.[\[3\]](#fn3) As the Trudeau government put further pressure on the agriculture industry in July 2022 to rapidly reduce their fertilizer use by 30%, farmers sounded the alarm, warning of worsening food shortages and huge economic losses (estimated at $10.4 billion CAD over the course of the decade).[\[4\]](#fn4) The Government of the Netherlands announced near-identical cuts in nitrogen emissions through reduction of fertilizer, radical reductions of livestock, as well as a reduction in intensive farming and the conversion to sustainable “green farms.”[\[5\]](#fn5) In the government's own proposal, they acknowledge an estimated 11,200 farms would be forced to close and another 17,600 farmers would have to cull a significant amount of their livestock.[\[6\]](#fn6) As a result, protests erupted outside Dutch parliament in The Hague, with reports of fire, manure and blockades contributing to unrest. ## External links - [Campfire Wiki](https://www.campfire.wiki/doku.php?id=sustainable%5Fdevelopment%5Fgoals) - [Website](https://sdgs.un.org/) - [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable%5FDevelopment%5FGoals) - [Wikispooks](https://wikispooks.com/wiki/Agenda%5F2030) --- 1. *Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.* (2015, October 21).
